Still, Apple is running advertisements aimed at such customers, hoping to persuade fence sitter to upgrade to Power Macintosh from older PC's. These programs run at about the speed of a 25 megahertz 486 PC, which is acceptable, though hardly a reason for users of Intel-based machines to switch.

Power Macs can also run applications written for Microsoft's Windows and MS-DOS operating systems, using emulation software provided by Insignia Solutions. The operating system on the Power Mac is a variant of System 7, the current Macintosh operating system, so it is familiar. So, Apple used some canny emulation software - a program that lets the Power PC "pretend" to be a 68000. The tricky part for Apple was maintaining compatibility with existing Macs, which use the 68000 family of CISC chips made by Motorola. The Intel processor in most personal computers is a CISC, or complex instruction set computing, chip, which is larger, more intricate and more costly to make. RISC means reduced instruction set computing: RISC processors use a highly optimized set of commands to achieve high performance at relatively low cost. Power Mac uses a highly efficient RISC chip developed by Apple, I.B.M. Making Power Mac faster and cheaper was the easy part. "It's nice to have the other guys chasing us for a change." With Power Macintosh, Apple "will hold a power leadership position for the first time in 10 years," said Brodie Keast, a product manager for Apple. But Apple will not stand still either, so look for dueling performance claims. Intel, in response, recently moved up the announcement of some faster Pentiums, and indicated that Pentium prices would come down sooner than expected. And it will run all the current Macintosh software and PC-based Windows applications. In contrast, Power Macintosh is faster than the fastest personal computers using the Intel Corporation's Pentium microprocessor, and at an entry price of $2,000, including the monitor and keyboard, it is priced about $1,000 lower than comparably configured PC's. Even the introduction of the original Macintosh in January 1984 was less than an unqualified success: Apple rolled out a slow machine at a high price with little software and no compatibility with its core product at the time, the Apple II. The faithful could look back through the years at the debuts of the Newton, Lisa and Apple III, and find much to worry about. Nothing in Apple's history has made this a sure thing. Apple appears to have pulled off the most important product transition in its history without crashing. APPLE COMPUTER will introduce the Power Macintosh tomorrow, and Mac lovers everywhere can breathe easy.
